Hi E7...I hope your time with family and friends has been peaceful and fun. As you all know the recent weeks in our area have had so many shocks to our collective minds and hearts. I am referring specifically to the tragedy at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Since part of our purpose in this course is to explore contemporary issues, I believe this may be worth our attention and discussion. Please follow the link that follows and read the response from the National Rifle Association (NRA). Post your thoughts about their proposal. Please clearly state your opinion either in favor or against. You are asked to take a position and explain your choice based on the article you will read. You may also draw on personal experience to support your ideas.

Looking forward to the dialogue that will follow. Be well....Ms. A

I agree that schools should be protected by armed forces because important people and things are protected like treasures why not the futur of the nation the scholars. I also agree that some video games promote violence and do nott reflect real life but occupy some evil minded people !!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fact that schools should be protected by armed forces because important personalities and valuable objects are. Why not protect the kids who are the future of the nation. I also agree that some videogames promote violence and influence kids negatively
DeleteI personal disagree with guns and gun violence all over the world. Gun power brings out the worst in people and they can only harm others. I feel guns should be no where around no citizens or people at all. There was a thought with teachers being able to have guns but what if i teacher was to go on an rarampage and we have a similar issue. Now sercurity could be a lot more positive to prevent problems from happening and open jobs for many to serve and protet.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the NRA's proposal for armed guards in every school is somewhat unreasonable and I therefore disagree with the situation due to the fact that the presence of armed guards at a school may cause affright to students. On the other hand, I strongly agree with "less video game violence" proposal. I've noticed that teenagers are heavily influenced by the things they see, and a prime example is video games. Though video games are not real, teenagers who play them often try to emulate what they see or hear in these games and these actions tend to result in dire consequences, so lessening the number of violent video games sounds like a good idea to me.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I do believe the NRA was right about how the United States has its priorities mixed up. We do protect our most valuable items by using armed forces, but when it comes to our children, we leave them on unsafe grounds. But I do not agree with the idea of firearms within a school. There are not only sick and demented people outside the schools but they are inside the schools as well. There isn't a way of knowing immediately when someone is going to do a form inhumane acts, such as the events that occurred in Connecticut or that fatal shooting in the movie theaters last summer. But we have to find help for these mentally ill people and nip the problem in the bud. And to do this it must start with the parents. Parents must not ignore the signs that there child isn't "normal" and find psychological help instead of letting the problem escalate. Until that happens America be prepared to hear more stories like these in the near future.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with what Lapierre said because incidents like this happen all the time in the united states. Creating a law or anything of that nature will not solve the problem. Having at least one armed guard in every school would help a lot because a security guard going up against a bad guy with a semi-automatic weapon has no chance of surviving or saving any life no matter how well trained he is. This kind of incidents have taken place multiple times in the past and it has come to the point where an armed guard might the only option left. As Lapierre said if we can use weapons to protect the president, businesses, airports etc.... why not use them to protects kids that are being killed everyday.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the NRA's suggestion to put armed guards in all schools, but also I think that people shouldn't be able to purchase such high caliber weapons at will, Even with a background checks I still dont believe it should be on the market.Because the past few incidents such as the movie theater shoot and now this in Connecticut were cause by individuals with a clean background. The goverment needs to resolve the gun control issues urgently before something else like this happen and then blame it on mental issues.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with the NRA's proposal because I believe having armed guards in school will definitely stop other "mentally ill" people like Adam Lanza from attacking schools. However, will they be stopped from attacking other places? No!. The government priority should be to protect Americans from gun attack at homes, schools, theaters, churches and other places. Am sure the so called"mentally ill people"have some senses to know not to attack places that are guarded by armed security so their plans will shift from schools.
ReplyDeleteFor instance, today I was at the mall and I saw some policemen with gun standing around. I am sure a person who is a "genuine monsters" would not be sacred of attacking such place because 1. Before he is stopped from killing, he would have killed some people which was his aim 2. Monsters would not mind being killed for satisfying their "thirst to murder"
So therefore, I think the NRA'S suggestion is for temporary purpose but WE DESERVE A PERMANENT PROTECTION.
After reading the article, I couldn't agree more with what the NRA is trying to accomplish by developing a national shield school emergency response program for every single school in America. School was the one place where parents felt their child/ children was the safest, but after the demonic rampage that Adam Lanza went on in Sandy Hook Elementary school, killing 26 innocent children who had their entire lives ahead of them, it really goes to show that you aren't safe anywhere. There a lot of mentally ill people walking around, planning there next attack, however no one knows who they are, when they'll strike or where they'll strike, so our best option is to take all the necessary precaution to ensure our safety. If we start by adding at least 2 armed forces in every school, I guarantee that there would be a lot less horrific massacre, than if the schools had no security and was left opened for psychopaths like Adam Lanza.
ReplyDeleteI strongly disagree, with the NRA allowing armed guns inside schools. I don’t believe that any type of weapons should within a school environment. If there was a situation that occurred and the guns were needed by the guards and they shot a student by an accident, then what? Who takes responsibility for the student? It wouldn’t be the NRA fault it would be the school fault for letting it happen. Then it becomes a bigger issue. If security was stricter it was just prevent the situation before it happens. So, no violence would have to be used at all.
ReplyDeleteYes, the situation that happened in Connecticut was harsh and crucial but however you can’t prevent things like that. Adam Laza was mentally ill the chance of that happening again is unlikley. For this not to happen again you just need to know whom your dealing with and no matter who they are you still need to make sure there clean. It’s usually the people you don’t expect to cause raucous that cause it so instead of the NRA suggesting the guards to carry guns they should think about not having any around school grounds. It’s nothing you can do about mental illness but there is something you can do about the safeness of the students and staff.
I agree with you Travis! No will take responsibility for their own action and even if the mistake were to take place, then everyone are willing to point fingers. Not only was it mental illness, but look at the affect that having guns in school will do to kids mentally.Kids will always be in fear, causing distraction and intimidation staring them away from learning. There are better protocals, but just not this one.
DeleteI agree with the NRAs plan to use guns to protect our children. But i feel like in order to decrease the violence that is spreading like a disease, we must set up a rigid exam that must be passed in order to buy or even have a licence for a gun, this way guns will less likely fall into the hands of people like adam lanza. We must find a way to deal with these sick and corrupt people in this world that pray on young children and adults alike, something must be done to get them off the streets. But since nothing can be done to get these psycho-paths off the streets, LaPierre plan is the best for us. the best way to protect our children is by having armed forces around the schools. After all we do use guns to do other things like protect our President, fight in wars, and even in big events. So why not use guns to protect the young ones, they are our future.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with NRA'S plan to add armed officers to schools because basically they are adding fuel to the fire. If they bring more guns to schools they will be doing more harm than good. We dont know what goes around in the lives of the police officers that are in our school protecting us, they could be sane or insane. we walked the halls everyday and see security guards at their post, how do you know what they are thinking? How do you know if they are not sick to the head or going through a depression stage in their life? They may look perfectly normal outside, but what about inside. Young people tend to cause trouble and create mischief. how can we know for sure that we are not the ones that will one day cause a secruity officer to become a adam lenza, and one day wake up wanting to kill us, like how adam lanza woke up one day and went to go commit the massacure that he did. it sounds a bit farfetched but we should know by now that anything is possible in the world we live in today i do achknowledge LaPierre statement on how if a bad guy does come with a gun, we would need a good guy with a gun at that moment. But Ask yourself this question is guns the actually problem or is it the people that are holding the guns that are the problem?
ReplyDeleteIn this case,i believe its people holding guns are the problem.Guns ends up in the wrong hands and something like this occurs.I also disagree entirely about NRA's decision about this armed forces situation. And its true,no one can be trusted in this world today.A better situation or protocal should be governed to get things under controlled about gun violence. This situation is making things tense and alot worse for our children of today

DeleteIn my belief the supply of guns to school officials is not a good strategy. This would just make it worse because students with the same ideals as Adam Lanza would constantly be exposed to guns therefore making it easier for the ones with no resources or ideas on how to obtain guns to size the occasion by obtaining a gun through force or from corrupt officials.
ReplyDeleteMy belief is that the only solution would be to find a way to reduce guns and in time retrieve all the automatic weapons out there.
Preventing the media from producing, exposing, and promoting deadly movies, videos, and games can have a positive effect in the matter.

In my opinion I agree with the NRA's plan to use armed guards to in every schools in order to protect our children. Like Lapierre said if we can use guns to protect our president, White House, and airports why not use it to protect our children. By adding one or two armed guards to every schools in the United States and sending a message to to such criminals and mentally ill like Adam Lanza. also by adding one or more armed guard to every schools is also beneficiary to the government because its creating jobs. Until then we expect such tragedies because this world is full of psychopath.
ReplyDeleteFrom: Yvon Thegeniste
I remember passing by different schools and I'd see "This is a Gun-Free school Zone" those signs are something that has been established for many years now. Why would society want to go back on there word and but guns in school. You weren't safe before what makes you think you'll be safe then. The only thing is your eliminating the fear of a psychotic killer coming into a school and leaving a massacre behind if he doesn't kill himself. But now you have to worry about psychotic teacher or student whose inside of the school (the way school shootings used to be for instance Virginia tech, or columbine) what is the NRA going to do then. I strongly disagree with the NRA's decision to put armed forces in schools because your trying to decrease or curb gun violence but your making it easier for unstable beings to get access to guns than ever before. Talk about setting fire to fury. And Lessing gun violence in video games is not going to do anything, the damage has been done. History repeats itself so there more heartache to come. Guns near kids- bad idea we need to think of something better.
ReplyDeleteReading this article,I believe that this action shouldn't take place.I believe better protocals should take place to make school safe and welcoming.Yes,of course the president and our army needs certain type of protection, but school is a welcoming place induce with enrichment and a peaceful atomsphere sparking motiviaton and creativity. With every school guard in tact, this can instill fear into students and provoke an unease to learn and to carry out actions as a student.Since it will bring distraction of being in danger at all times. The NRA shouldnt follow through this decision,it will only harm the outlooks of children safety and education.
ReplyDeleteLastly, where is all the money coming from?Who is able to provide these fundmentals for our children? These funds could go into better, investing in some other protections instead of guns.Scanners, cameras,or some other alternative just so it doesn't take moral affect upon the children. The economy is at its knees at this point and investing into this, is putting more upon the economy. For the sake of the children,"A child growing up in America today witnesses 16,000 murders and 200,000 acts of violence ,so seeing violence or witnessing violence with these new protocals, act more upon the student? There are better reasonings out there then this one.
I agree that America does have its priorities mixed up, but only to a certain extent. People wonder why so much security is given to the president for his protection, but not given to children in public schools for their protection. I feel as though running a country as big as America everyone cannot be a priority,so needles to say its not that the priorites are mixed up because what is a country without a president? sadly, one can say that citizens do not weigh up to the importance of the president or higher officals we are considered the "least of the barrow". I also disagree with the NRA's plan to allow armed guards in schools where young children spend most of their time. First of all guns do not kill people, people do, so giving a gun to a "armed official" for the use of protection is like giving any random person a gun in the street, but instead llegally they have the right to use it. Today so many people on this earth have psyhcological problems that cause them to commit crimes that no one has answers for. Being that you can not by physical means point out that someone has a mental disorder, its hard to say that these armed forces will never commit any violence. For example, Police officiers are suppose to help us, but according to numerous sources even the police are active in shooting innocent citizens and raping innocent women. The world we live in today is way to curruptive to fight violence with violence. Brining a gun to a gun fight, does absolutely nothing but allow violence to continue. In my opinion "police officers" or "armed forces" are just titles, behind the title, uniform and degree earned by reading books in college and passing tests for a permit are average people who have the same capability to be a Adam Lazan as the person with no degree for secrurity purposes. Dont let a title fool you! I also agree that video games play a major, major role in the societies violence rate. In video games we are allowed to shoot, kill, stab , and rob people, this is amusement for some being that no consequences follow because it didnt really happen. In reality, if you take a closer look, the violence that happens around us actually does mimmic what happens in video games, the only difference is outside the video its real, people are loosing their lives and families are being torn apart. I personally do not believe that these individuals should be punished with death due to the fact that they have a mental issue that can not be controlled. I think both the victim and society will benefit from prgrams that will help these individuals. It will help society by keeping them off the streets for hopefully the reduction of violence and it gives the person with the mental disease a chance to turn over a new leaf. We never really know a persons life or motives to kill, so who are we to decide death upon them. I believe that by providing more help to the mental patients it will decrease crime, but by allowing protection through the use of a weapon, i feel it will only give the incentive that "legal death" is ok to commit.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article “NRA calls for armed guards in every school as answer to Sandy Hook massacre” by Lynn Sweet , I personally agree with the National Rifle Association (NRA’s) proposal because I believe having armed guards in every school and less video game violence will lower the crime rates and stop individuals like Adam Lanza from doing chaos in our society, in places like Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, Ct. where 26 innocent children and adults were killed in gun massacre by a Psycho. I agree with the National Rifle Association armed guards in every school and less video game violence in order to save our young ones. A child growing up, being exposed to video games that contains violence enables them to believe shooting and killing other is the right way to go, simply because they are seeing it done in video games on a daily basis. As NRA executive Vice President Wayne Lapierre stated that our nations priorities are all messed up, because all we care about is our money in that case we protect our banks with armed guards. He also stated that we protect our American airports, office buildings, power plants, courthouses, even sports stadiums are all protected by armed security guards, including our own president Barack Obama is protected with Secret agents. Protecting all of those places is wonderful, because it protects our country. However, when it comes to our most beloved, our children of the future there’s no armed security guard there to protect them. School should be a safe learning environment, where parent’s feels should be the safest place for their children. Our society is full of dangerous monster who are controlled with demon thoughts, which walk among us everyday with intentions of evil deeds.
ReplyDeleteMy position on this is yes there should be guarded schools because of the type of environment us individuals live in which is infested with disturbed and treacherous individuals. I think this problem that occurred Newtown, Ct. is a clear outlook on why there should be armed trained police and safety patrollers. 26 children was shot and killed with no type of resistance I feel that in order for our young children to be protected there should be armed Guards even though it’s a little expensive employ these Guards it can be effective. The type of issues that occur out of schools or even near or across the schools region it can decrease because the force and the protection that can be provided. I think that it is a very shrewd and useful method that can help and ease staff and parents.
ReplyDeletei disagree with the NRA'S plan to allow armed guards the oppertunity to use guns for protection in public schools because i believe that it will not only cause violence to increase in schools, but in other public places as well. Armed guards are human beings just like us, they expereince life struggles and have emotion. when emotions comes in to play people deal with issues differently. You never know what mood or the things that "security guards" go through within their homes. Most people bring their problems from home to work and on a bad day it may result in another Adam Lazan incident that cause people their lives. By giving guns to armed guards to protect students i believe that it will not decrease gun violence, it would actually increase it.
ReplyDeleteHas the NRA lost their mind?!?!?! I feel that kids must be protected in schooll but not up toi the point where they have to enforce guns into the students environments. The best way to enforce child safety is to install scanning in all USA school making sure that everyone gets scan including school staff and teachers. You cant predict day a person is just going to come and shoot up the school; they should already be prepared for what might happen in the future. The safest place your child should be is in school, no parent should hear their child has been kilt in school. No parent should bare to even have that come acrosss their mind while their at work.
ReplyDeletePeople believed in the rumor, that the world was going to end in 2012. They blame that myth because of all the chaos and destructions that has been happening so many times in just one year. I realized that was just a distraction for the carelessness of the government. Going back to the Second Amendment, which stated the rights to bear arms, has now back fired people who had their lives taking away and the cause of the most recent massacre of Newtown, Connecticut. To possess a gun, the law says you'd have to have a gun license and to be the age of 21 +. If you think that's hard wait till you hear this my dear classmates.
ReplyDeleteI live in Bethlehem, a small valley in Pennsylvania. It may seem peaceful and quiet, but there is a disturbing tradition here. On November 26, every year on the last Monday of November, schools are closed for hunting season. That's the time when majority of the kids here have an easier access to shotguns, rifles, and etc. To my knowledge the governors of Pennsylvania don't seem to take into consideration that parents are allowing their kids to handle such weapons and the that hazards that it may cause. For all I know, a parent can pass down such weapons to an absent-minded child, and this will repeat a similar incident that happened in Newtown. I hold the government responsible for this so call tradition and not the children.
Our young generation is as important as our older generation. If school shootings are an on going issue students will begin to feel there no longer safe. Parents and guardian's want to know that there kids are in school safe and learning. I feel a protection officer is as dangerous as a bad guy holding a gun. Holding a gun can make someone feel they have the power to do what ever. Now our school boys and girls have scanners and I've witness adults walking into the building without being scanned. I feel no matter who you are you should be scanned. Teachers, Coaches, deans etc are as dangerous as other people visiting the school. Video games play a big part I feel it corrupts young minds. Having no knowledge on a gun and what it can do and then playing a game that show guns are only for one thing and thats to hurt others is a bit persuasive. These people who are shooting are either mentally disturbed or just trying to prove a point. I believe no matter who your trying to protect and where the guns are located THey ARE NOT SAFE!!!! If a school gaurd feels the need to use the gun in school what happens then!? If it was an option i would say eliminate the selling of guns. I feel altogether anything dealing with guns or violance is weird "the licenses to kill" NO ONE SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO END NO ONES LIFE!!!
ReplyDeleteI am slightly torn on the NRA's proposal for armed forces in our schools. On one side the point that we use officers and guns to protect every other aspect of our lives that we deem important so why not give our children the same protection? is a good one. It seems like the most logical decision.
ReplyDeleteBut as we all know the most logical solutions are not always the most realistic or else the world and our govt would be perfect. LaPierre compares the safety of our children to the safety of other things, yet all of the things mentioned (banks, airports, and even the president's safety) have ALL been infiltrated before. There have been successful bank robberies, terrorist attacks, and of course the case of John F. Kennedy. So what makes them think that this will be different?
Although higher caliber protection for students seem like something that may keep us safe, there are more negative effects than positive. For one, it would instill in a small child that guns can be used to solve every problem. Also, as a young child, I don't think I would necessarily feel comfortable being around a person with a gun all day, every day.
The psychological damage is also instilled through the video games kids play nowadays. The concepts/problems are all too real with tactics that are all too fake. Blurring the lines between graphic design and real life, these video games present a fantasy world that has a greater impact on children than we realize. Even the evolution of our generation has quickened and children are maturing at a faster rate physically and intellectually, their emotional response and the psychological damage that can be caused is still very much prominent. They are still kids and still very impressionable.

ReplyDeleteI'm in favor with the NRA 100%. There are no shadow of doubt in my mind that there are numerous safety guidelines that are put in place to protect our Government, airports, congress, court houses etc, but when it comes down to the people that are innocent and hopeless, those are the ones that are left out in the open. As a consequence of that , they are the ones that are often targeted. "How have our nation's priorities gotten so far out of order?", LaPierre questions. But one thing that definitely opened my eyes, was the fact that he mentions that "copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame", which is a high probability of happening. I can recall in the summer when the movie a dark night rises came out in theaters. A man went in the theater armed with a fully loaded gun, he then stood before the audience and started firing off rounds to innocent victims consciously, children where also killed. About a week later, people were trying to copy that incident. The point that i'm trying to make here is that something needs to be done when it involves gun violence and innocent lives. And this, I believe is LaPierre's main argument.
ReplyDeleteLaPierre further went on to discuss other contributing factors of violence that we all most likely witnessed some points in our lives.Video games. I agree with him because most video games contains elements that promotes violence, such as; guns, killings etc. These contribute because it corrupt minds of the people playing it causing them to behave more vicious.
Although I do not know the victims nor their families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School , i definitely felt depressed when I found out the devastating news. But I feel a lot better knowing that the NRA is not staying silent, but yet they are speaking out against gun violence and using the incident at Sandy Hook Elementary School is the best example to support their claims. If there were some sort of protection with armed security guards , then 26 people would of been alive today and those kids would have opened their presents with their families on christmas day.
I am in favor with the NRA. The National Rifle Association forcefully stuck to its call for placing armed police officers and security guards in every school as the best way to avoid shootings such as the recent massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.I think it's crazy not to do it. It's the one thing that would keep people safe. As LaPierre said, they protect the president with armed secret service agents, banks and airports are protected by armed guards but they let innocent people defenseless. This must change. Also, efforts by congress to regulate guns would not prevents mass shootings. The NRA called also for less video games, and i totally agree with that. Violent video games teach violence. You cannot unwind the stress by playing a violent game, because it causes more stress. It is a spinning wheel of violence. The games teach that the violence is the answer for stress. This is totally wrong. Adam Lanza was mentally ill but it was also a victim of video games violence. He finished by taking rid of his stress on innocent people and ending up his own life. After all, the massacre of sandy hook elementary school is a tragedy that should not have happened. Innocent people's was taking away for no reason. It is a good thing to read that the NRA is trying to take several measures to prevent an event like this.
ReplyDeleteI can see that we all have our own views of this issue of " Gun violence", but i think we can all agree that guns are made for control, to create pain, sadness, terror and ultimately death. I also think that we can all agree that the best solution to ending "gun violence" is to eliminate all guns, period. this however is not likely to take place.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I think the second best to do is to find ways to protect our defenseless children and our civilians. the idea that the NRA proposed:to put trained, armed guards in school is a good idea( for the same reasons as Monsurat said, with the policemen in the mall). it will create fair or hesitance to who would want to harm others in public places, to the " genuine monsters".
the NRA proposal will have a greater positive impact in fighting the "gun violation" issues if they are to accept the proposals of the Democrat in Congress; to have guns with limited bullets in clips, to have rough and thorough background checks before buying a gun, and to limit the king of guns civilians can own.
I am not saying that these proposals will end these violent crimes. But i will say, as for right now it is the best solutions we have to reduce these crimes, to reduce the terror and the sufferings that is taking place.
I agree with the NRA's proposal with adding armed officers to our schools. I believe with the armed forces in our school there will be a less chance of things happening in our school systems. Some may say they do not agree with me and I can understand where they are coming from. No one wants a group of armed individuals basically watching over us. To some that is pretty scary it would seem like you are in a concentration camp. But even with that feeling there is still a feeling of security. I believe that the NRA should have done this a long time ago because sandy creek isn’t the on massacre that shook America. There was also the shooting at columbine high school in 1999 which left 12 students and one teacher dead and 21 students injured. There also was the Virginia tech incident in 2007 which left 32 people dead and 17 others injured. So when you say that the NRA has no right to even suggest this you are gravely wrong.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fact that NRA is calling for armed guards in every school as answer to Sandy Hook massacre.
ReplyDeleteERROR>&^*%&*^%^*%&^%&&36e2635e236235427423527462364352472546236252542xbr23ef2f2d42365f4d
I strongly disagree of placing armed guards in schools because school is a learning institution where parents send their children to attain an education but there would be men walking around with guns especially, schools where they are young children because The NRA did stated “schools” so that must include kindergarten as well. That could be a major factor in the safety of our children because armed guards are human themselves. According to the Sun Times article LA Pierre said “our society Is populated by an unknown number of genuine monsters people are deranged, so evil, so possessed by voices and driven by demons that no sane person can ever possibly comprehend them. Who knows one day a student might say something offending to one of the guards when he or she is having a bad day and the armed guard would retaliate by shooting the student. The word “gun” was used several times whether it was considered good or bad. In the article it stated that a gun in the hands of a Secret Service agent protecting our president isn't a bad word. A gun in the hands of a soldier protecting the United States of America isn't a bad word. And when you hear your glass breaking at 3 a.m. and you call 911, you won't be able to pray hard enough for a gun in the hands of a good guy to get there fast enough to protect you. On the contrary, “five years ago, after the Virginia Tech tragedy, when the NRA said we should put armed security in every school, the media called me crazy”. Guns in my opinion is not something good even though sometimes it can be used to in positive ways to save people lives but that’s rare. Guns were first created to fight in war which I do not see how is that a good thing. It is used to kill each other and so many inhumane ways. Most of the guns used in the present day are used to kill not to protect so having armed guards in school would be more detrimental to society.
